Rams Head Inn on Shelter Island has Ten Free Moorings!
Shelter Island in Gardener's Bay is not usually the place you find a bargain, but here's one for you. The Ram's Head Inn has 10 moorings on a first come / first serve basis. There's no launch service, but they do have a dinghy dock. Moorings are a courtesy of the Inn for guests of the restaurant / bar and Inn. The Inn and restaurant are a bit pricey, expected for this area. The free mooring should soften that blow a bit.
If you happen to not be able to grab a mooring, Coecles Harbor has a decent anchorage with decent protection. Either way, you can find a spot to stay for free. The best price of all.
This is a fairly secluded area with few amenities available other than the Ram's Head Inn itself. If you're looking for a VERY quiet anchorage or mooring, this be the place. There is one small beach at the anchorage and another on the other side of the road. Great for the photo bug looking for sunrise/sunset shots of still harbors.
